Baltimore Gas and Electric

BGE is a company that provides both electricity and gas to Maryland. It is owned by a larger Illinois-based company called Exelon. BGE serves about 1.3 million electric customers and 700,000 gas customers. Those customers are located in Baltimore City, Baltimore County, and Anne Arundel County, most of Howard, Carroll and Harford Counties, and parts of Prince George’s, Montgomery and Calvert Counties.

In July 2026, BGE filed its most recent electric rate case, proposing to collect an additional $156.1 million from customers, increasing distribution rates for residential electric customers by roughly 17 percent from 4.9 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) to 5.8 cents per kWh. This increase includes the “reconciliation” charge that was authorized by the PSC in 2025 and lasts through December 2027.

BGE is not currently requesting to increase its distribution rate for gas.

If BGE’s increase is approved, its electric distribution rates will have increased by 58 percent since 2020 and 129 percent since Illinois-based Exelon Corp. acquired BGE in 2012—significantly outpacing inflation.

BGE’s last completed rate case was in 2023 and was a multi-year rate case. The Public Service Commission order in the case was issued on Dec. 14, 2023. You can access the PSC order and the multi-year rate case here.

Current rates

Electric and gas bills include two primary categories of charges: distribution charges and supply charges. These categories of charges and additional charges are explained here. The distribution rate covers most of the average customer's distribution costs. In 2026, the volumetric rate makes up 81 percent of distribution costs for the average BGE gas customer and 82 percent of distribution costs for the average BGE electric customer.
