Winter Weather

Before the brutal cold, snow, and ice hit, be sure to:

-   Repair roof leaks and cut away tree branches that could fall on your home during a storm.

-   Check seals on doors and windows. Caulk and weather-strip as needed. Check siding for cracks.

-   Insulate water lines that run along exterior walls to prevent frozen pipes. Insulate walls and attic.

-   Install storm or thermal-pane windows, or cover windows with plastic from the inside.

-   Install a smoke detector and a carbon monoxide detector near fireplaces, wood stoves, or kerosene heaters.

-   Have your furnace system and vent checked for proper functioning.

-   Consider buying a portable emergency generator or whole-house standby generator.

-   Cover and secure your outdoor furniture, firewood, grill, etc., with heavy tarp.

-   Have your chimney or flue inspected if you plan to use a fireplace or wood stove for emergency heating.

-   Assemble an emergency supply kit with food, water, first aid, important documents on thumb drives, etc.
